The core loop: the Raid
Tarkov is played in sessions called "raids." You drop into a map, gather loot, complete objectives, and try to reach an extraction point before the timer runs out. Succeed and all your gear plus your findings stay with you.
Die and almost everything you carried is left behind for others to take. This high-risk, high-reward loop is what makes Tarkov one of the tensest and most rewarding games in its genre.
PMC and Scav: your two characters

Your PMC is the main character you control; its level, skills, quest progress and stash are permanent. You pick one of two factions: BEAR or USEC. Gameplay-wise they are nearly identical.
The Scav is a free second character you can play on a cooldown. You spawn with random gear, have nothing to lose, and if you survive, all that gear goes into your PMC stash. It's the safest way for beginners to learn the maps.
Other terms you should know

Core terms you'll hear constantly:
- Stash: Your storage. Everything you own lives here and persists until the wipe.
- Secure container: A small protected case whose contents survive even if you die.
- Extraction: The point you must reach to "win" a raid.
- Wipe: A periodic reset of all progress (level, stash, quests).
- Loot: Valuable items you find in raid to sell or use.
PRO TIP
Play your first 5–10 raids as a Scav. With nothing to lose, you learn the maps, extracts and enemy sounds for free — and earn free gear on top.
WARNING
Everything OUTSIDE your secure container drops when you die. During a raid, move valuable-but-small items (keys, cards) into your secure container.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I start as a Scav or PMC?
Scav is recommended for your first few raids. You learn maps, extracts and enemy positions risk-free. Know at least one map well before switching to PMC.
Should I pick BEAR or USEC?
Gameplay-wise there's almost no difference; both use the same weapons, gear and maps. Differences are cosmetic plus a few minor quests. Pick whichever you like.
