Icebreaker Guide

Icebreaker is the new map added to Escape from Tarkov on 25 May 2026 with the 1.0.5 update: the Boreas, a nuclear-powered icebreaker ship stranded in the Gulf of Finland. It is the game's thirteenth location and its first marine map. The map is PvE only — there are no random real players, and it is played solo or in squads of up to three. Battlestate Games confirmed the map will remain permanently after the event ends. With its high-value loot and tough enemies, it is currently a hotspot for players looking to make money — but the lack of working insurance makes it genuinely risky.

How to Get There

You cannot enter Icebreaker directly. First you must complete the entire Boreas quest chain from Mechanic, then transit to the ship by hovercraft from the pier on Shoreline. Below is everything you need, in order, from starting the chain to boarding the ship and extracting from it.

Boreas Quest Chain — Step by Step

1Start the quest chain

The Boreas chain can be opened two ways; doing either one is enough.

  • Paradigm Shipping poster: it spawns on Ground Zero and Lighthouse, and can also drop from scav pockets and bags. The poster cannot go in your secure container — you must survive and extract with it, or it is lost if you die.
  • Alternative: upgrade the Intelligence Center in your Hideout to level 3, then physically walk up to it and listen to the distress signal on the radio.
Start the quest chain

2Talk to Mechanic

After you extract with the poster (or pick up the radio signal), talk to Mechanic in your hideout. He hands you the Boreas chapter and points you to Woods.

3Woods: Repair the tower

Repair the antenna/comms tower Mechanic marks using a Toolset.

  • The tower is in the Scav Bunker area in the north of the map; follow the road heading north from Sawmill.
  • You can carry the Toolset in your secure container, so there is no risk of losing it.
  • The Goons trio (Knight, Big Pipe, Bird Eye) can spawn nearby; approach carefully.

4Lighthouse: Get the documents

Find the Paradigm Shipping documents on Lighthouse, read them and extract with them.

  • The documents are in the hangar/warehouse building near the train station north of the Water Treatment Plant, behind the boxes on the right-hand side.
  • After extracting, confirm the document in the Handbook menu; progression sometimes hangs on this.

5Return to hideout: Mechanic, then Prapor

Once you bring the documents back, report to Mechanic first, then immediately talk to Prapor. Here the chain splits into two branches, and you must finish both to reach the ship.

6Infill branch: BTR Driver

The BTR Driver unlocks entry to the ship. It is completed one of two ways:

  • Mechanic's path (recommended): kill 10 enemies in smuggler zones — PMCs, Scavs and hostile NPCs all count. Shoreline (Smuggler's Path) or Interchange (Power Plant) work well. Return to the BTR Driver when done.
  • Skier's path: deliver specific ammo types to the BTR Driver — generally slower and less preferred.

7Exfill branch: Prapor + AMG-10 fluid

Prapor unlocks the ability to extract from the ship. The common requirement is AMG-10 fluid (helicopter oil) found on Reserve. Your choices in the Falling Skies quest can add extra objectives.

  • AMG-10 fluid on Reserve: inside the helicopter cabin directly opposite the White Pawn building, or in the Black Bishop basement (shelves, tables and floors).
  • If you gave the armored case to Prapor during Falling Skies, the AMG-10 fluid alone is enough.
  • If you kept the case, also deliver 3 Military Power Filters (Woods/Reserve bunkers).
  • If you never did the quest, additionally kill 30 Scavs and carry a flare.

8Transit: Shoreline pier

Once both branches are done, you transit to the ship by hovercraft from the pier on Shoreline.

  • The pier is by the old boat extract area, next to the gas station and the car extract.
  • The transit fee is 400,000 ₽; the cash must be in your inventory, not in the secure container.
  • Sanitar and his guards can now spawn right next to the pier, so the transit area can be a hot zone.

9Prep to extract: 2,500 € + green flare

Leaving the ship costs money and requires a signal; bring these into the raid with you.

  • Carry 2,500 € (it can also be found on the ship, but bring it to be safe).
  • Carry a green signal flare: a handheld RSP-30 green flare or a 26x75mm green signal pistol round both work.
  • Fire the flare at the helipad and wait for the 'Route Safe' message before entering the extract zone.
  • Remember: insurance does not work on this map — any gear you lose is gone for good.

Boss: The Wedge

The map's boss is The Wedge, a Black Division operative. The Wedge is found in the gym on level three of the ship and is accompanied by 3-6 Black Division guards; the number of guards scales with the player count in the raid. The Goons trio (Knight, Big Pipe, Bird Eye) and Rogue enemies also roam the ship.

  • The Wedge and his guards wear class 5 armor plates; low-penetration rounds pinball off the chest.
  • Use ammo with a penetration value of 40 or higher; aim for the head or the legs.
  • The guards come as a group; try to isolate them and pick them off one by one from cover.
  • Watch out for the Goons trio; they work in coordination and are heavily geared.
  • Suppress your primary weapon; sound carries far through the metal corridors.

Loot and Money Making

  • The best income source is Black Division bodies: they drop M4 and MCX magazines, ammo, armor, helmets, night vision and extra weapons.
  • The map holds some of the game's most valuable loot: LEDX, quad-NVGs, class 5 helmets and top-tier ammo and armor plates.
  • Quick money route: Infirmary → Storage & Security → Engine Room → Helipad bodies, then extract.
  • Heading to the upper deck turns the raid into a full clear; if you only want money, extract early.
  • Costs are high: with transit, extract and gear, a single run can exceed 1,000,000 ₽, which makes the map better suited to experienced players.

Survival Tips

  • Insurance does not work; your gear is lost for good when you die. Tune the value you bring accordingly.
  • The map contains radiation that constantly drains your health; be especially careful in the lower sections of the ship. Carry items like Golden Star Balm to clear radiation.
  • Extract points: Helipad (always open), Lifeboat Davits (port side), Engine Room Hatch (requires a key) and Ice Sheet Crack (2+ player co-op).
  • Solo is possible but hard; go with a 2-3 player squad if you can.
  • Clear the ship top-down: Helipad → bridge → engine room.
