What Is Tarkov PvE Mode? How It Differs from PvP

PvE mode offers the same gameplay as PvP, but against AI-controlled PMCs instead of real players. It uses a separate character and your progress is never wiped.

PvE vs PvP

Feature-wise the two modes are the same: the same maps, quests, traders and extraction rules. The differences:

  • Opponents: in PvP other PMCs are real players; in PvE they are controlled by AI.
  • Character: PvE uses a separate character; gear and progress from your PvP character do not carry over.
  • Wipes: PvE progress is never reset. Your level, skills, weapon mastery, trader standing and completed quests stay with you.
  • Content: PvE has its own Ref quest chain and special trade offers.

Who can play it?

PvE mode is included with The Unheard and Edge of Darkness editions. Owners of other editions can buy it as an expansion on the official website. On Steam the same content is sold as the "Escape from Tarkov: PVE Zone" DLC, released on 15 November 2025.

Can you play with friends?

Yes, PvE can be played in a group. If you tick "Play on BSG servers" on the location selection screen, the raid runs on the official servers; otherwise it runs on your own PC. Servers are mandatory on Streets of Tarkov, Icebreaker and Terminal, and when playing in a group.

Not the same as Practice mode

The Practice mode in the main menu is not PvE. Practice lets you tweak AI amount, bosses, weather and more, but no progress is saved after the raid. It is great for learning maps and testing weapons; if you want lasting progress, pick PvE.

Who is PvE for?

If you want to play at your own pace without wipes, or finish quests without running into cheaters and veteran players, PvE is a sensible choice. Use our quest list and Kappa tracker to plan quest chains and the Kappa goal.

Does Tarkov PvE get wiped?

No. According to the official description, PvE progress is persistent: level, skills, mastery, trader standing and completed quests are never reset.

What is PVE Zone?

It is the PvE mode sold separately for players who do not own The Unheard or Edge of Darkness. On Steam it is listed as Escape from Tarkov: PVE Zone.

Is the PvE character the same as PvP?

No, PvE uses a separate character; PvP gear and progress do not carry over.
